Amber is tree resin that has hardened over time. It has the dual distinction of being extremely old and having been used ornamentally for thousands of years. People burned amber like incense Because It emits a sweet smell. The German word for amber is "Bernstein" which literally means "burn stone" Amber starts out as a thick, sticky resin produced by certain trees, particularly pines. Over a long period of time, the resin hardens. It has to be at least a million years old to be called amber.
