Pearls are a product of mussels (type of an oyster), rarely of snails. Although the hardness of pearls is low. they are extraordinarily compact and it is very difficult to crush them. Pearl sizes may vary between a pin head and a pigeon’s egg. The largest pearl ever to be found (called the Hope Pearl after the former owner) is 5 cm in length and weighs 454 ct (1814 grains = 90.8 grams). It is presently at display at the South Kensington Museum in London. In Vedic Astrology, Pearl is worn for planet Moon (चंद्रमा). It helps in curing depression, mental disorders, improving memory.
